Day One - Las Vegas - Fri
I stayed at the Stratosphere Tower Hotel and Casino and had a nice room with a bath, so took advantage of the bath, then walked an hour down the strip, managed to only get so far as the Bellagio then headed back as I had to be up early to collect the car the next day. The strip was full of cowboys because Vegas is hosting some rodeo championships, so lots of cowboy hats on display.
Day Two - Valley of Fire, Nevada - Sat
I picked up the car, with the added disadvantage of not having a credit card they would accept and the warning that if I was heading up into the mountains I should get an upgrade from the basic compact model. In fact I was automatically upgraded as they didn’t have any compact cars and anyway I wasn’t heading into the mountains, I was going to the canyons…
I drove out of Las Vegas north towards The Valley of Fire, which had been recommended to me by a fellow traveller in San Francisco, I’m glad I took his advice as it was an amazing place. You drive up through the boring desert, catching glimpses of some bright orange rocks, then you enter the park and it’s dotted with amazing rock formations, some the bright orange colour, others rainbow.
I was able to drive around the major sites and see petrified logs, beehives, petroglyphs and rocks with fantastic shapes due to water and wind erosion. I spent over 3 hours driving and walking in the park and could easily have spent longer if I’d had the time. The sun shone which made the colours even brighter and I’m sure made the wedding photos of a cowboy and his bride even more special - it was weird seeing wedding photos being taken in the desert, but I guess so close to Vegas anything can happen!
