Angels & Demons

I went to see Angels & Demons, or Illuminati as it is known as here, last night and I got one of the comfy seats in the balcony at Cinema (Nymphenburger Str, Munich) definitely worth the extra money to watch the film in relative luxury. The advantage of Cinema, is that they do Original Version (OV) films, so Müncheners get the chance to see it in the original language without sub-titles or dubbing, definitely a plus.

One thing about watching films with a German audience, they always seem to laugh at inappropriate moments and have no problem talking throughout the film, which can be off-putting. The lady behind me seemed to find the film very agreeable, with her ‘Jawohls’ reaching me every so often. Along with her deciding to put on her scrunchy jacket, then taking it off again throughout the film. The sanctity of silence in a theatre doesn’t seem to work here.

First off, Tom Hanks in speedos is not the same Daniel Craig in swimming trunks, luckily the shots weren’t as graphic. The film itself is rather silly, lots of CGI, as they weren’t permitted to film at the Vatican. And lots of speedy shots to show we were watching a thriller. The acting wasn’t great, sometimes it was rather amusing, but not deliberately so, you would suddenly get the focus on various characters eyes which was meant to portray fear or wisdom or some other emotion.

But if you’ve not read the book or forgotten the plot then it’s not obvious who the guilty party is, unless I wasn’t concentrating enough. But the plot involves anti-matter, the Vatican, symbology and sexy scientists (Ayelet Zurer), if you like that kind of thing. I did love how random characters were so knowledgeable in things you would least expect them to be and Professor Robert Langdon (Tom Hanks) is one of the luckiest people when a problem happens.

If you’re looking for a film you don’t have to concentrate on, with a rather silly plot (why was the eye inside the chamber?) then you’ll be fine. But definitely not a film to watch again, unless you’re desperate!
